Whimsy Blocks - Plant Applique Quilt Block

Houseplants- I used to kill them but the older I get better I am at taking care of them. My great grandma gave me a Christmas cactus when I was little, I had it for over 20 years. She also grew violets. I have plants of both kinds to remind me of her. Right now my violets aren't looking so hot, this blog post is reminding me I should water them.

Happy August! If you received my newsletter recently then you heard about the Whimsy Blocks and Little Stitcheries programs I am running this year. I wanted to do something different in 2020 for you. If you missed the newsletter and want to get in on the fun, you can sign up here.

You can see the video here on my YouTube channel.

So let's get started on the Plant Block!

Get the pattern here.

All 12 of the Whimsy Blocks are 8.5" x 8.5" with a finished size of 8" x 8". The pattern pieces are reversed and ready for tracing on to fusible backed webbing. If you want to know more about doing applique with this method, you can read this post here.

I chose to use a straight stitch and leave the edges raw for the blocks. I choose a variegated rainbow colored thread. That way I can use the thread on all 12 blocks in my quilt.

What to make with this applique? There will be 12 blocks in this series so you could make each block every month and put them together in a wall quilt. That was my first project with the 12 blocks. This block is also the perfect size for a mini quilt or a mug rug. You could put it on a pillow or a t-shirt. The possibilities are endless.
