Whimsy Blocks - House Applique Quilt Block

It's funny that I planned this block to be May's block back in December of last year. And as I write this blog post, we are in the process of packing up our house and moving.  I thought we would moving over the summer but house things fell in to place much sooner. We are moving a short distance from where we live now, so it isn't that big of a change. This is the first move we have ever made without having to move my studio as well, I cannot tell you how happy this makes me. Enough about my house, let's talk about this block.

If you missed the newsletter with the previous blocks and want to get in on the fun, you can sign up here.

You can see the video here on my YouTube channel talking about the Whimsey Blocks.

So let's get started on the House Block!

Get the pattern here.

All 12 of the Whimsy Blocks are 8.5" x 8.5" with a finished size of 8" x 8". The pattern pieces are reversed and ready for tracing on to fusible backed webbing. If you want to know more about doing applique with this method, you can read this post here.

I chose to use a straight stitch and leave the edges raw for the blocks. I choose a variegated rainbow colored thread. That way I can use the thread on all 12 blocks in my quilt.

Once I had the quilt made, I went back in and stitched sun rays with six strand embroidery floss. This gives it a little more interest.

What to make with this applique? There will be 12 blocks in this series so you could make each block every month and put them together in a wall quilt. That was my first project with the 12 blocks. This block is also the perfect size for a mini quilt or a mug rug. You could put it on a pillow or a t-shirt. The possibilities are endless.
